SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Solomont Speaker Series: Dr. Vivek Murthy
LOCATION: Sign in to download the location
URL:https://tufts.campusgroups.com/rsvp?id=376264
DESCRIPTION:Join a conversation with the 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States and New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Vivek Murthy, about his book: Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. In Together, Dr. Murthy makes a case for loneliness as a public health concern: a root cause and contributor to many of the epidemics sweeping the world today from alcohol and drug addiction to depression and anxiety. Loneliness also has implications far beyond our health: it affects how children experience school, how we navigate and perform at work, and the sense of division and polarization felt across the country.\n\nTogether: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World was chosen as this year's selection for the Common Book Program, a partnership between the Tufts University School of Medicine and Tisch College, for all incoming medical students.\n\nFollowing Dr. Murthy’s tenure as Surgeon General, he founded The Together Project, an initiative to prioritize social connection and community building in America. As part of this effort, he hosts Staying Human, a podcast and Substack community exploring how we can live truly fulfilling lives grounded in belonging, joy, and meaning.\n\nRegister for in-person or virtual attendance.\n---\nEvent Details: https://tufts.campusgroups.com/rsvp?id=376264

LOCATION: Sign in to download the location
URL:https://tufts.campusgroups.com/rsvp?id=376269
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, how has presidential power evolved in the United States since the Constitution was enacted? The appropriate use of and limits on emergency presidential power have become the topic of much heated debate in our current political context. But how did the framers of the Constitution intend to balance emergency powers with limits, and how and why has this balance eroded over time? Join a conversation with Professor Chris Edelson on executive authority, the rise of authoritarianism and what’s at stake for American democracy.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nProfessor Chris Edelson is a constitutional scholar and a lecturer in the political science department at UMass Amherst. His work focuses on the problem of constitutional failure, the question of balancing presidential power against limits on power, and the need to hold authoritarians accountable for abuses of power. Before UMass Amherst, Edelson was previously Assistant Professor in the department of government at American University for 16 years. He is the author of three books on presidential power, including his most recent book, Above the Law? The Evolution of Emergency Presidential Power.\n\nRegister for in-person or virtual attendance. All are welcome. Lunch provided.\n---\nEvent Details: https://tufts.campusgroups.com/rsvp?id=376269

DESCRIPTION:What comes with representing something larger than yourself? \n \nA jersey connects an athlete to a team, an institution, and a community. That connection can bring expectations and opportunities that have little to do with the final score. \n \nJoin us and Tufts Athletics for a conversation with Kerry Collins, former Senior Director of Community Relations for the Boston Bruins. Drawing on more than two decades with the organization, Collins will offer a behind-the-scenes perspective on how athletes can use their influence, navigate institutional priorities and work with others to create meaningful change in their communities. The conversation will explore what it takes to turn individual initiative into collective action as student-athletes find their voices within the teams and institutions they represent. \n \nRegistration required.
